Expanding Yoga Horizons

Aerial Yoga Man-Woman Sandstone Med Rez

The pristine beauty of the Sonoran Desert attracts people from all over the world to Scottsdale. A feeling of calm and serenity blankets your mind while being in the heart of the desert, making Scottsdale the ideal location for your desired spiritual practice, yoga. Scottsdale goes above and beyond your average indoor yoga studio. Whether taking you out into nature or taking you to new heights, Scottsdale offers more unique yoga opportunities than ever before.

THE PERFECT BACKDROP

With spectacular weather year-round, take your yoga practice outdoors in Scottsdale. New programs for the fall at The Boulders, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel make it even more enticing to abandon those mirrored, studio walls. The raised platform in the on-site organic garden is the perfect spot to transform your body and mind, with new features that include beautiful canopy sails. Ancient boulders and desert flora and fauna surround you in the 5,600-square-foot garden. A reflection pond is an added bonus to ensure pure serenity. Sunrise and sunset yoga sessions offer guests time to relax during brisk mornings and breathtaking sunsets, when it is believed that “Chi” is the strongest. If you are looking for a more adventurous take on yoga, head to Promise Rock, where yoga sessions are offered at 2,288 feet above ground level.

YOGA FOR YOU AND FIDO

Our next stop for unique yoga is W Scottsdale , where furry friends are welcomed for Doga. There’s no need to keep your dog cooped up in your hotel room or at home. They can get in on the yoga fun too. You read that right- your dog is invited to yoga. A brief socialization period before the class allows participating dogs to become familiar with each other. The class is designed to increase flexibility and relax muscles, while taking you and your dog through a series of yoga poses. Yogis and pooches enjoy the class on the first Tuesday of the month.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE POSE

Who needs a mat to practice yoga? You won’t at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess . The resort offers Aerial Hammock Yoga for individuals looking to overcome gravity. By utilizing a fabric hammock suspended from the ceiling, you glide and release into each pose. Regardless of your yoga experience and fitness level, specifically trained yoga instructors guide you through each pose to ensure safety. If you are seeking a more peaceful approach on the ground, consider Candlelight Flow Yoga. This class is offered in the resort’s Atrium. The candlelight glow filling the room adds a soothing touch to your experience.

RAINFOREST IN THE DESERT

Butterfly Wonderland is bringing the rainforest to you in its latest monthly series, Yoga in the Rainforest. In this class, you practice all levels of Vinyasa based yoga, geared toward connecting breath with movement while taking in the beauty of your surroundings. Thousands of butterflies from around the world will fly freely among you during the class in the largest butterfly pavilion in America. The unique lush rainforest environment brings a sense of calm over the class. While on your mat, you will be surrounded by blooming flowers, tropical plants and soothing waterfalls. Leading your class is 200-hour certified yoga teacher Rhiannon Ritchey. Ritchey has been teaching yoga for nine years, and she’ll help you with any modifications or adjustments as she guides you through a series of yoga postures.

Ron Pratte Collection to be Auctioned off at Barrett-Jackson

1950 GM Futurliner: Photo Courtesy of Barrett-Jackson

The vintage car community has no shortage of superstar collectors, but one can argue that there is none bigger than Ron Pratte and the collection he has amassed over the years. Total numbers are estimated to be more than 100 cars and 1,400 items of memorabilia.

The Phoenix native and multi-millionaire has be seen front and center at past Barrett-Jackson auctions where he has purchased most of his collection. Granting no interviews to the media, he remains somewhat of a mystery outside his collection. That collection is being auctioned off at this year’s Barrett-Jackson and is estimated to fetch at least $50 million. To put that in perspective, the sales record achieved at last years auction was $113 million. Yeah, it’s that big of deal.

Some notable cars going up for sale include a 1950 GM Futurliner (which all sales from this car will benefit the Armed Forces Foundation) and a 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake (one of two built, and the other was totaled in a crash).

Look for Pratte’s collection to be the highlight of the show this year and for last year’s sales record to topple. Stay tuned for event schedules to see the collection on the auction block.

Bureau draws need-time visitation with holiday campaign

Resort packages, dining and activity deals, and signature events entice visitors looking for sun in November and December

ScottsdaleHolidayExperience.com

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Oct. 14, 2014) – The Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau launched the third year of its holiday campaign, an effort to increase hotel occupancy from Nov. 21 through Jan. 9, a need-time period for the local tourism industry.

This year, the campaign is targeted at adults 35-54 years old from target markets – including Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Denver, San Francisco and Canada – who may not have traditional holiday plans and are looking for a warm-weather destination where they can enjoy holiday activities with a Sonoran Desert twist.

New to the campaign this year is the use of third-party research that will allow the bureau to reach visitors with a propensity to travel to Scottsdale in emerging markets such as Seattle, Boston, Dallas and Philadelphia.

“With the additional research we’ve done over the past few years to target Scottsdale’s ideal visitor, we hope to move the needle even more on holiday visitation,” said Caroline Stoeckel, vice president of marketing at the bureau. “Last year, we were told that one of our member hotel properties saw a $10,000 gain in room revenue simply from their involvement in this holiday campaign. We know that it is making a difference.”

Playing off of four popular holiday jingles, including “The Weather Outside is Delightful,” “Baby It’s Warm Outside,” “Let It Glow,” and “Hiking in a Winter Wonderland,” the campaign uses the surreal desert images of the bureau’s brand campaign to highlight Scottsdale’s warm holiday season. Resort packages, activity and dining offers, as well as Scottsdale holiday events can be found on ScottsdaleHolidayExperience.com and will be promoted through online marketing, direct mail, email and print.

This is the third year of this campaign to increase holiday visitation in Scottsdale. Last year, the campaign resulted in over 56,000 page views and garnered over 8 million impressions. Since the launch of the holiday campaign in 2012, Scottsdale hotels and resorts have experienced a 7.2 percent increase in occupancy during the November/December time frame.
