With more than 320 miles of well-maintained trails in the area, it’s no wonder Scottsdale was once named by National Geographic as one of the nation’s top 15 hiking destinations. If you’re planning a hiking excursion in Scottsdale, here are five great trails to consider:

Gateway Loop Trail – Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve

If peace and solitude are what you seek, the Gateway Loop Trail is ideal because it’s away from the city bustle. The 4.5-mile trail only gains 680 feet in elevation so it’s a nice leisurely walk through the desert that loops around to your starting point.

Pinnacle Peak Summit Trail – Pinnacle Peak Park

If you’re game for a moderate workout, this north Scottsdale gem is a great choice. A wide, smooth trail leads you to the summit where you’ll enjoy expansive views of the Valley. Keep your camera handy, as your hiking companions are likely to include Gamble’s quail, jackrabbits, cactus wrens and road runners. The roundtrip distances is 3.5 miles, with an elevation gain of approximately 1,300 feet.

Lost Dog Wash – Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve

An old jeep tour route, Lost Dog Wash climbs a low ridge into the McDowell Mountains. This popular trail affords spectacular views of surrounding landmarks like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West as well as other mountains like Camelback and Pinnacle Peak. The trail only gains about 380 feet in elevation, but its out-and-back length of just over 5 miles makes it a moderate undertaking.

Go John Trail – Cave Creek Regional Park

Want to see a desert tortoise? You just might along the 6-mile Go John Trail, which loops around jasper-studded hills. It’s moderate with a few bursts of difficulty and features views of nearby Spur Cross Ranch. In the spring, Go John has blooming wildflowers.

Scenic Trail – McDowell Mountain Regional Park

Located near the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, the Scenic Trail is good for families because it has a wide variety of scenery without too much elevation gain. Enjoy the sights of the Verde River and Superstition Mountains as well as springtime wildflower blooms. If you walk the full trail out and back and you’ll cover nearly 7 miles.

Best Scenic Views

Easy: The Lost Dog Wash Trail in Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve provides expansive East Valley views from the Lost Dog Overlook, which was an ancient Native American tool-making site. In spring, this trail is often awash with wildflowers. Difficult: The Preserve also is home to Tom’s Thumb Trail, a challenging scenic track that climbs more than 1,300 feet in 2.5 miles through a wonderland of huge boulders. The trail offers excellent views of Tom’s Thumb, the most recognizable feature in the Preserve and a popular spot for rock climbers.

Great for Working Up a Sweat

In central Scottsdale, Camelback Mountain’s Cholla and Echo Canyon summit trails reward hearty, experienced hikers with intense workouts and panoramic city views. The Sunrise Trail East in Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a four-mile out-and-back hike that boasts a 1,150-foot elevation gain – great for burning off those extra calories. The views of the Valley from the peak are magnificent.

Ideal for Families

The Bajada Trail at the Gateway to Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve is an easy 1/2-mile interpretive loop that’s family-friendly and ADA accessible. Add a short walk on the Saguaro Loop Trail to give kids a little more time out in the desert.

Best for Wildflowers & Birding

The Preserve’s Quartz Trail follows a large desert wash slowly uphill through a beautiful development for two miles and into the Preserve. This shady, slightly wetter wash often produces a great variety of wildflowers. The wash’s abundant vegetation also attracts a wide variety of desert birds.

Most Dog-Friendly

All of the trails in Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve are open to hikers and their four-legged friends. Keep in mind that dogs, like people, have varying degrees of physical fitness so choose a trail that matches both your and your dog’s abilities and carry enough water for both of you.

Great Hiking/Climbing Combos

Pinnacle Peak Park offers breathtaking north Scottsdale views from its summit trail as well as a variety of traditional crack and bolted climbing routes on the namesake 200-foot granite peak and other formations like Cactus Flower and Y-Crack Boulder. In Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve, Tom’s Thumb is a 150-foot granite pinnacle offering excellent cracks of all grades. The hike to Tom’s Thumb is strenuous and steep, but the breathtaking scenic views are worth the effort.

Good for Strolling

If you’d like to experience Sonoran Desert flora and fauna in a more urban setting, check out the Desert Botanical Garden’s five thematic paths, which illustrate topics like desert wildflowers, conservation, desert living, and plants and people of the Sonoran Desert. OLDIES BUT GOODIES
Pop the Dom Pérignon because 2016 is a big year for Scottsdale. Several iconic resorts and attractions are celebrating milestone years, including the iconic Hotel Valley Ho, a national historic landmark. This fun and funky Mad Men-esque hotel is honoring its 60^th birthday and 10-year reopening anniversary—an endeavor that restored the property to its former grandeur. Much like the Hollywood stars once did, enjoy your mid-century modern guest room. The property just underwent $4 million refurbishment that included the addition of new décor, brand-new 49-inch HD televisions and custom-built designer furniture. The Hoover Dam, Robert Redford and Pope Francis are all celebrating the big 8-0 this year and so is Scottsdale’s jewel of a hideaway—The Hermosa Inn. THE MYTH LIVES ON
The legend of mermaids has existed for almost as long as men have sailed the oceans. While there is no guarantee that mermaids exists, Scottsdale can confirm the opening of its own mythical creature—a seafood restaurant in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. On March 19, Crab & Mermaid Fish Shop will begin to serve casual seafood at its nearly 4,000-square-foot downtown Scottsdale location. This new restaurant’s menu will include popular bi-coastal seafood dishes such as clam chowder, lobster rolls, crab cakes and more. At the helm of the kitchen is culinary maestro Chef Isaac Carter, who is best known for the 12 years he spent with celebrity chef Todd English’s enterprises. DOWNTOWN IS ABLAZE
Scottsdale is a place that is constantly evolving. While it holds its western roots near and dear, the downtown in particular has undergone a renaissance as it welcomes new, innovative businesses while also celebrating the treasures of yesteryear.

Food offerings are an integral part of any city’s identity. With more than 800 restaurants in and around downtown, Scottsdale is no different. But now the destination is taking the farm-to-table concept one step further with three Arizona wine tasting rooms popping up in downtown. These wine tasting rooms tell the story of Arizona’s 100 award-winning vineyards, many of which boast 90 point wines as recognized by Wine Spectator. Take LDV Wine Gallery, for example. The Wine Gallery brings the taste of Southeastern Arizona wine region to the heart of Downtown Scottsdale. About 45 minutes away from LDV Winery in Southern Arizona is another winery that has been making a name for itself—Aridus Wine Company. This family-owned vineyard may run the largest custom crush facility in Arizona out of Wilcox, but you can sample several grape varietals in its Downtown Scottsdale tasting room. You don’t have to go all the way to Jerome to try Salvatore Vineyards. This small, family vineyard also opened a downtown tasting room in 2015 where you can try their exceptional wines.

Not to worry if wine is not your taste. You won’t have to wander too far to find Arizona breweries and restaurants that are perfecting the art of beer making and serving. Start the day at Sip Coffee & Beer House, a restaurant and bar that feels like your best friend’s backyard. This unassuming joint offers small bites, live music on select days, and a beer list that includes local brews from Dragoon Brewing in Tucson and Papago Brewing in Scottsdale. Right next door is Goldwater Brewing, which opened its doors in May 2015. This family-owned brewery’s signature beers include West Coast style IPAs, ales, lagers, and specialty and seasonal beers. Grab a souvenir growler-to-go before popping over to Two Brothers, a family-run brewery that’s based out of Naperville, Ill. Two Brother’s Scottsdale location offers up year-round, seasonal beers and artisan beers, as well as barrel-aged sours. Then, it’s off to Bad Water Brewing’s comfy taproom, which only seats 30. Try one of the brewery’s trifecta of beers, the Saison, IPA or Western Lager, while enjoying a cheese board.

Scottsdale pays homage to its western roots at its newest attraction, Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. Since its 2015 opening, this non-profit, story-telling institution has created quite the name for itself, recently becoming a certified Smithsonian Affiliate museum. As an Affiliate, Western Spirit will receive loans of iconic artifacts, as well as educational programming, expert speakers and career development for museum professionals.
